Amruta Guggulu

The Great Aswin twins, the celestial physicians formulated this Amruta Guggulu. Amruta Guggulu is used for gout, piles, skin diseases, wounds, rheumatoid arthritis, fistula, reduced digestive power and constipation.

The Reference Shloka —

प्रस्थमेकं गुडूच्याश्च अर्धप्रस्थंतु गुग्गुलोः |
प्रत्येकं त्रिफलायाश्च  तत्प्रमाणं विनिर्दिशेत् ||
सर्वमेकत्र संक्षुद्य  क्वाथयेन्नल्वणेंऽभसि |
पादशेषं परिस्राव्य पुनरग्नावधिश्रयेत् ||
तावत्पचेत्कषायंतु यावत्सांद्रत्वमागतं |
दंतीव्योषविडंगानि गुडूची त्रिफलान्वितं ||
ततश्चार्धपलं पूतं गृहणीयाच्च प्रति प्रति |
कर्षंतु त्रिवृतायश्च सर्वमेकत्र चूर्णयेत् ||
तस्मिन् सुसिद्धं विज्ञाय कवोष्णे निक्षिपेद्बुधः |
ततश्चाग्नि बलं ज्ञात्वा तस्य मात्रां प्रयोजयेत् ||
वातरक्तं तथा कुष्टं गुदजान्यग्निसादनं |
दुष्टव्रणं प्रमेहांश्च आमवातं भगंदरं  ||
नाड्यस्थिवातं श्वयथुं सर्वानेतान् व्यपोहति |
अश्विभ्यां निर्मितः पूर्वं अमृताद्योहि गुग्गुलुः ||

prasthamekaṁ guḍūcyāśca ardhaprasthaṁtu gugguloḥ |
pratyekaṁ triphalāyāśca tatpramāṇaṁ vinirdiśet ||
sarvamekatra saṁkṣudya kvāthayennalvaṇeṁ’bhasi |
pādaśeṣaṁ parisrāvya punaragnāvadhiśrayet ||
tāvatpacetkaṣāyaṁtu yāvatsāṁdratvamāgataṁ |
daṁtīvyoṣaviḍaṁgāni guḍūcī triphalānvitaṁ ||
tataścārdhapalaṁ pūtaṁ gr̥haṇīyācca prati prati |
karṣaṁtu trivr̥tāyaśca sarvamekatra cūrṇayet ||
tasmin susiddhaṁ vijñāya kavoṣṇe nikṣipedbudhaḥ |
tataścāgni balaṁ jñātvā tasya mātrāṁ prayojayet ||
vātaraktaṁ tathā kuṣṭaṁ gudajānyagnisādanaṁ |
duṣṭavraṇaṁ pramehāṁśca āmavātaṁ bhagaṁdaraṁ ||
nāḍyasthivātaṁ śvayathuṁ sarvānetān vyapohati |
aśvibhyāṁ nirmitaḥ pūrvaṁ amr̥tādyohi gugguluḥ ||

The Ingredients —

  • Guduchi — Tinospora cordifolia
  • Guggulu — Commiphora wightii
  • Triphala — Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) + Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) + Bhibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica)
  • Danti — Baliospermum montanum
  • Vyosha — Maricha (Black pepper) + Sunthi (Ginger) + Pippali
  • Vidanga — Embelia ribes
  • Trivrit — Operculina turpethum

Therapeutic Indications —

  1. Vata rakta — Gouty arthritis or Raised Uric acid levels
  2. Kushta — Skin diseases
  3. Agnimandya — Decreased appetite
  4. Dushta Vrana — Non healing Wounds
  5. Prameha — Urinary Tract Disorders
  6. Amavata — Rheumatoid Arthritis
  7. Bhagandhara — Fistula
  8. Nadi Marmasrita Vata Roga — Internal Abscesses
  9. Sodha — Inflammation

Benefits of Amruta Guggulu —

  1. Amruta Guggulu has uricosuric property for which it is beneficial for gouty arthritis and reduces uric acid and prevents uric acid accumulation on the joints, also joint pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis. 
  2.  It improves digestion and reduces Ama, toxins produced due to malabsorption of food.
  3. Due to antibacterial and antimicrobial action, it also helps reducing acne with pus or pimples with redness and tender pain.
  4.  Its ingredients have potent anti-obesity action, so it can also be beneficial for people with obesity.
  5. Amruta Guggul increases the excretion of the uric acid through the kidneys. It acts on renal insufficiency to filter the wastes and excreting the uric acid and other toxins.
  6. It improves kidney functions.
  7.   It also prevents the formation of uric acid stones.
  8.  Amruta Guggulu corrects metabolic disorders and reduces the production of uric acid. 

Amruta Guggulu Dosage —

  1. 1 karsha upto 12 grams per day, as per the digestive strength of the patient
  2. In practice, it is administered as a dose of 1-2 tablets, 2 – 3 times a day, usually after food or as directed by the physician.
Amruta Guggulu Adjuvants —
  1. In case of Fistula along with Abhayarishtam
  2. In cases of Non healing wounds along with Maha Manjisthadi Kwath or Nimbadi Kashaya
  3. In cases of low digestive strength along with Ayaskruti
  4. In cases of Gouty Arthritis — Chinnaruhadi kashaya or Amritottara Kashaya
  5. In cases where it is used to detoxify blood — Maha manjisthadi Kashaya, Sarivadi Kashaya, Gopatmajadi Kashaya etc,.

The Side effects of Amruta Guggulu —

  1. Loose stools (may occur only with excess dosage)
  2. Headache (only with dosage that exceed from 10 grams a day)

The Contraindications of Amruta Guggulu —

  1. During Pregnancy and lactation
  2. In children below the age of 6
  3. Patients who are already emaciated or where muscular dystrophy is found.
