Vasakarishtam is a classical Ayurvedic liquid formulation that supports respiratory health. It contains Vasaka (Malabar nut) as its chief ingredient, a herb known for its strong mucolytic and anti-asthmatic properties. Because it helps liquefy and expel excess mucus, physicians commonly use it in many Kapha-dominant respiratory conditions. In addition, it helps manage inflammatory and bleeding disorders such as haemoptysis and Rakta Pitta.
People also know this formulation by several names, including Vasakasavam, Vasakasav, Vasakarishta, Vasarishta, Vasarista, and Vasakadyarishtam.

Ingredients of Vasakarishta —
The formulation mainly includes:
- Vasaka — Malabar nut
- Decoction of Panchanga of Plant Adusa (Vasaka)
- Mritasanjivani Sura
Together, these ingredients act synergistically to support respiratory function and help clear excess mucus.
Ayurvedic Actions on Doshas
Vasakarishtam works primarily on the Kapha and Pitta doshas while also supporting balanced Vata in the respiratory system.
- Reduces Kapha: It clears thick mucus, eases chest congestion, and supports free breathing. Therefore, it works well in productive cough, bronchitis, sinus congestion, and asthma with phlegm.
- Pacifies Pitta: It helps control heat and bleeding tendencies in the respiratory tract. As a result, it is useful in conditions like Rakta Pitta, haemoptysis, and inflammatory throat disorders.
- Supports Vata balance: By clearing airway obstruction and easing breathing effort, it indirectly stabilizes Vata in the chest region. Consequently, it may help reduce breathlessness and dry, irritating cough when associated with Kapha.
Thus, Vasakarishtam acts as a Kapha-Pitta pacifying formulation with secondary Vata-supportive effects.
Indications of Vasakarishta —
Physicians traditionally use Vasakarishta in a wide range of respiratory and throat disorders. For example, they prescribe it in:
- Rakta pitta
- Kasa (Cough)
- Throat Diseases
- Urah kshata
Moreover, it is beneficial in inflammatory conditions of the upper airways, such as:
- Pharyngitis (sore throat)
- Laryngitis
- Tonsillitis (redness and swelling of tonsils)
In addition, it supports treatment in lower respiratory conditions, including:
- Bronchitis
- Asthma — where it may help reduce wheezing, breathlessness, and chest congestion
- Cough with thick yellowish sputum or fever
- Upper respiratory tract infections
Similarly, it may be useful in:
- Common cold with thick nasal discharge
- Sinusitis
- Nosebleed (epistaxis)
- Haemoptysis (coughing up blood)
Dosage of Vasakarishta —
Generally, the recommended dosage is 12–24 ml once or twice daily, usually taken after meals with an equal quantity of water. However, the exact dose should always be decided by an Ayurvedic physician, depending on age, condition, and digestive strength.
Side Effects of Vasarishta
Traditionally, Vasakarishta is well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage. However, individual responses may vary, and excessive use may cause gastric irritation in sensitive individuals. Therefore, professional guidance is advised.
Contraindications
There are no widely documented absolute contraindications. Nevertheless, people with chronic illnesses, those on long-term medication, or individuals with alcohol sensitivity should consult a physician before use, as this is a fermented preparation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of Vasakarishta during pregnancy is not clearly established. Therefore, pregnant women should use it only under strict medical supervision.
On the other hand, it is traditionally considered relatively safe during lactation, and no significant adverse effects have been reported in breastfeeding mothers when used appropriately. Still, medical consultation is recommended.
