Ayurvedic Perspective

According to Ayurveda, Vasavaleha supports the management of Swas Roga (respiratory disorders) primarily because of its Kapha-balancing properties. By reducing excess Kapha, it helps clear accumulated mucus from the lungs and eases breathing difficulties.

At the same time, its Vata-balancing action reduces dryness in the respiratory tract. Consequently, this combination promotes the expulsion of sputum and improves airflow. Therefore, Vasavaleha offers supportive care in conditions such as bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and allergic rhinitis.

Actions of the drugs —

Vasa (Adhatoda vasica)
Vasa acts as a strong expectorant and bronchodilator. Its leaves contain vasicine, a quinazoline alkaloid that works as a bronchodilator and respiratory stimulant. In addition, vasicine shows hypotensive and cardiac-depressant effects and may stimulate uterine contractions.

Pippali (Piper longum)
Pippali fruits contain the alkaloid piperine. Piperine supports respiratory health because of its antiseptic and expectorant properties. Moreover, it enhances the bioavailability of other herbs.

Honey
Honey provides antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral benefits. Furthermore, it soothes irritated mucous membranes and supports lung health.

Ingredients of Vasavaleha —

Benefits of Vasavaleha —

Asthma

Asthma is an inflammatory condition in which the airways narrow, swell, and produce excess mucus. As a result, breathing becomes difficult and coughing may worsen.

In Ayurveda, Vata and Kapha doshas mainly contribute to asthma. When aggravated Vata combines with deranged Kapha in the lungs, it blocks the respiratory channels and causes breathlessness. This condition is known as Swas Roga.

Vasavaleha helps balance both Kapha and Vata. Consequently, it reduces mucus buildup and relieves breathlessness, thereby helping manage asthma symptoms

Cough

A cough commonly occurs during colds and respiratory infections. Vasavaleha is considered one of the effective Ayurvedic remedies for cough, especially productive cough. When taken regularly, it helps loosen and expel mucus.

Additionally, taking Vasavaleha with honey enhances its soothing effect on the throat and lungs. Because of its Rasayana (rejuvenating) property, it also strengthens respiratory tissues over time.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis involves inflammation of the windpipe and bronchial tubes, which leads to mucus accumulation and chest congestion. In Ayurveda, this condition resembles Kasa Roga.

When Vata becomes imbalanced, it obstructs Kapha in the respiratory tract. As a result, sputum accumulates and blocks airflow.

Vasavaleha helps correct this imbalance. It reduces dryness, supports mucus expulsion, and clears respiratory passages. Moreover, its Rasayana property helps improve immunity, which further supports recovery from infections.

Allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, causes sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and throat irritation. Ayurveda describes this condition as Vata-Kaphaj Pratishyaya, which develops due to impaired digestion and dosha imbalance.

Vasavaleha helps balance Vata and Kapha; therefore, it may reduce mucus production and ease nasal congestion and irritation.

Dosage of Vasavaleha —

The recommended dose of Vasavaleha is 6-12 grams. Take this medicine with Honey, Warm milk or water.

Side effects and Contraindications —
