Premature Greying of Hair – Remedies

The last post was about the causes and the food to eat to prevent premature greying of hair. Now let us see some home remedies which will help prevent and reduce it.

1. Amla — Amla, is excellent for a variety of hair problems including premature graying, dull hair, and hair loss. Being rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, it has anti-aging benefits. In addition to consuming this fruit, you can also apply amla oil or amla pulp on your hair.

• Put some coconut oil in a pan. Boil a few dried amla pieces (if you do not have dried amla then use amla powder) in the oil until they become charred. Let the oil cool. Apply the oil on your hair and scalp. Leave it on overnight, or at least for an hour, before rinsing it out. Do this at least once or twice a week.
• Alternatively, you can mix together one tablespoon each of amla pulp and lemon juice. Massage your scalp with it at night before going to bed and wash it out the next morning.
• You can also apply a combination of equal amounts of amla juice and almond oil. You can add a little lime juice, too. Apart from reducing grey hair, this also facilitates healthy hair growth.

2. Curry leaves — Curry leaves help increase darker pigmentation in your hair. When combined with coconut oil, it works as a great hair tonic.

• Boil a handful of fresh curry leaves in a tablespoon of coconut oil until they become charred. Strain the oil.
• Massage it into your hair. Leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes before rinsing it out.
• Follow this treatment at least once or twice a week


3. Henna — Henna works as a wonderful natural hair colorant. Besides making your hair darker, it will strengthen and condition your lustrous locks.

• Grind a handful of henna leaves into a paste. Add three teaspoons of Amla powder, one teaspoon of coffee powder, and a little plain yogurt. Spread it evenly on your hair. After it dries, rinse it out and then shampoo your hair as usual. Repeat the process once every two to four weeks.
• Another alternative is to boil some henna leaves in coconut oil or mustard oil until the leaves become charred, and use this oil on your hair.
• You can also prepare a henna hair mask by mixing hot black coffee and henna powder until you get a yogurt-consistency. Cover the bowl and let it sit for a few hours. Apply it to your hair, leave it on for one to three hours, and then shampoo your hair.


4. Coconut Oil and Lemon Juice — Coconut oil works wonders for your hair. It moisturizes your hair, stimulates hair growth, fights infections, and adds luster to your hair. When used for a prolonged time, it also helps reverse gray hair because it is packed with antioxidants.

• Mix three teaspoons of lemon juice in some coconut oil, enough for the length of your hair.
• Apply it to your hair and massage it into your scalp. Leave it on for at least an hour before shampooing your hair.
• Repeat on a weekly basis.

5. Onion juice — Onion juice is believed to be a brilliant home remedy for thinning hair and premature graying. Recently, researchers found that gray hair is chiefly caused by a buildup of hydrogen peroxide at the base of the hair follicles and a decrease in a natural antioxidant compound, called catalase. Onion juice promotes the production of this compound.

• Apply onion juice onto your scalp, massage, and leave it on for about 30 minutes to an hour.
• Repeat the process daily for a few weeks.


6. Amaranth — Amaranth combats hair loss and helps stop premature graying by retaining the natural color of your hair.

• Shampoo your hair.
• Apply fresh juice extracted from amaranth leaves on your hair and scalp.
• Rinse it out.

7. Black sesame seeds – According to traditional Chinese medicine, black sesame seeds are highly effective in getting rid of the problem of premature graying of hair. It is believed that they promote melanocyte activity to produce melanin.
They are also rich in protein, iron, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and copper. Simply eat a teaspoon of black sesame seeds daily for at least three months. Regularly applying sesame oil on your hair is also useful.

8. Ginger Grated ginger mixed with a tablespoon of honey must be taken on a daily basis for preventing hair from turning grey.

9. Ghee — Massaging with pure ghee, twice in a week, curbs the problem of grey hair.

10. Ridged gourd (Torai) — Boil ridged gourd in coconut oil till it turns black for 3-4 hours. Massaging the scalp with this oil cures premature greying of hair.

11. Black Pepper — 1 gm of black pepper and ½ cup of curd is also a good option for massaging your hair and scalp to curb grey hair. Lemon juice can also be added to this mixture.

12. Almond Oil — Mix equal amount of almond oil, lemon juice, and amla juice. Massage your hair with this mixture to cure the problem of grey hair.


13. Guava Leaves — Guava leaves are also good for turning grey hair black. Just grind some guava leaves and apply on your scalp on the regular basis.

14. Aloe Vera Gel — Apply aloe vera gel as a therapeutic remedy for premature greying of hair.

15. Ashwagandha (Indian ginseng) — For treating your grey hair, apply ashwagandha or Indian ginseng on your scalp. It helps in increasing the melanin content of the hair.

16. Bottle Gourd Juice (Lauki) — Bottle gourd juice can be applied in hair along with olive oil or sesame oil to treat the premature pigmentation of hair.

Premature Greying of Hair – Causes and what to eat to prevent it

There was a time when hair graying happened to only older people. But in our present day, due to high-stress levels and pollution, we see this even among girls as young as 16. It has become an important concern and thousands of people, men and women alike, are seeking medication.

So how do we stop graying of hair? Lets us first look at why hair grays occur –

Your hair follicles contain pigmentation cells. These pigmentation cells are called melanin; that’s responsible for giving our hair the color it naturally has. The higher melanin content your hair follicles will generate, the darker your hair color will be. And similarly, the lower the melanin content generated by your hair follicles, the lighter your hair will be. As we grow older, there is a loss in these cells, which results in lessening the intensity of the color and eventually loss of color. When the melanin count decreases significantly at an early age, premature graying of hair is experienced.



The causes:

We say that too much stress tolls on our hair. True, but there are many other reasons:

  1. Genetics — It is scientifically proven that premature graying of hair is mostly genetic in nature. So if your parents experienced the same issues and spotted their grays early, chances are, you will do the same as well.
  2. Vitamin B12 deficiencyAnother important reason that leads to premature gray hair is the deficiency of Vitamin B12. The absence or lack of this vitamin allows the graying process to happen faster and earlier. Because of this, the gray hair begins showing up at a much younger age than would otherwise have happened.
  3. Thyroid problems and Health issue — If you have been diagnosed with any major illness or are suffering from some health issue over a prolonged period, then you can expect to see some premature grays. Also, people who suffer from thyroid tend to gray earlier.
  4. Lack of Nutrition — Being healthy is all about eating healthy and right. What you eat is what you will see, on your skin, on your hair, and on your overall health. The right kind of diet will give you all the nutrients that your body needs to function properly. If you are fit and healthy, your hair too will show the signs. And this will also help in postponing the advent of the grays.
  5. Stress/Hectic Lifestyle — This is not something that is entirely backed by science, but it is a known fact that the more amount of stress you have, the higher the chances of your health getting affected. Those who are prone to getting stressed or take unnecessary stress show signs of premature hair graying earlier than others of their age.
  6. Smoking — If you have not been able to kick the butt yet, time to start thinking. Studies have proven that those who smoke stand four times higher chance of facing premature graying than those who don’t. Each time we see a new hair it’s equally frustrating, isn’t it? Of course, you can’t help it if it’s happening due to genetics, or some medical issues. But for all the other causes, you can surely try and postpone the appearance of grays. Take care of yourself, stay fit and stay happy.

Ayurveda says Nidana parivarjana i.e., curtail the causes, it will help reducing the problem by a great extent.

Some steps to prevent the premature greying of hair –

  1. Reduce stress — This is the first culprit if you are suddenly undergoing a massive change in your hair color. Learn to manage stress and handle your time. Take short vacations frequently to keep your stress in check.
  2. Eat Right — There is an absolute need for us to eat right – pack in a lot of proteins as your hair and nails are made up of a protein called Keratin. Include spinach, dairy products like cheese, milk, butter, etc., if you don’t like dairy products, try low-fat ice-cream or better yet, protein supplements.
  3. Quit smoking — If you have the habit of smoking, quit it right away. Cigarettes are known to contain carcinogens or cancer causing elements that affect your hair follicles too.
  4. Check your thyroid level — People with thyroid malfunctions – hyper or low secretions, also are prone graying of hair. Get your thyroid level checked.
  5. Quit Harsher Shampoos — Switch to mild shampoos and better yet, organic shampoos. The harsh chemicals in the shampoos and conditioner are known to affect the product of the pigment and cause hair fall too.
  6. Oil your hair — Sometimes, the dry, dehydrated hair gives way to graying of hair as there is a loss of moisture too. Oil your hair regularly or treat yourself to hair spas to see a better hair condition.
  7. Avoid Usage Of Perfumed Hair Oils — These hair oils contain perfumes, which might contain strong chemicals. The natural the oil, the better the results and lesser the side effects like graying.

What to do –

  • Ridge gourd, boiled in coconut oil, is known to help immensely in the treatment of graying of hair.
  • Also, use concentrated tea as a rinse as it helps to prevent hair color loss.
  • Consumption of curry leaves is not old wives’ tales. My grandmother, at an age of 70, has lovely long black hair. Even today, she boils curry leaves in coconut oil and applies it to her hair and makes sure I do the same.
  • Grate fresh ginger, mix with honey and set aside in a jar. Eat one tsp daily.
  • Mix one tbsp of table salt(with iodine) and strong black tea. Massage into scalp and hair. Rest for an hour or so and wash your hair.
  • Massage your scalp every night with amla juice, almond oil and a few drops of lemon juice. This prevents premature hair graying.

What You Should Eat –

The best way to get the benefits of various nutrients is through the consumption of nutritious foods. Here are some foods that you can eat to reduce and prevent gray hair –

  1. Fresh Greens — Make sure that your diet contains sufficient amount of vegetables. Increase the consumption of spinach, celery, capsicum, cabbage, cucumber, and other green leafy vegetables and fruits. Another important nutrient-rich food is spirulina (it is a blue-green sea alga). A big glass of green smoothie every morning is enough to brighten your mornings as well as keep that gray color away from your hair.

  2. Chocolate Now, you can stop your hair from graying by eating chocolates. Can there be any other food to prevent gray hair better than this? Chocolate is rich in copper, which boosts melanin production in the body. But make sure to eat pure dark chocolates. It will give maximum benefits and still not overload your system with calories.

  3. Triphala — How many times have you heard about the magic effects of Triphala? It has many benefits. Triphala consists of three fruits, such as amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki. Each one of them is good for your hair, skin and eyes. Drinking a glass of triphala water prevents graying of hair. It also makes your hair healthy and strong.

  4. Berries — Include strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, blackberries, blueberries and mulberries in your diet. Berries are rich in vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in antioxidants. According to principles of ayurveda dry grapes have the body cooling properties. Hence its use in burning micturition  (burning sensation while passing urine) is very well appreciated. Soak 8-10 raisins overnight in a cup of water. Next day morning blend these with same water and consume in empty stomach. This helps in conditions like cystitis or “infection urinaire”.


Ayurveda acharyas eulogize grapes and raisins as “trishnaghna” or substances which quench thirst in conditions like fever and dosha imbalance. In these conditions we feel increased thirst which cannot be satiated by plainwater . For this boil 20 – 25 raisins in a liter of water and cool it. Sip this water frequently and chew the boiled raisins in between.

Raisins are quite high in calories, which can increase weight gain quickly if you are not careful. You need to factor in extra caloric intake in your diet, regardless of the other benefits that small amounts of raisins can give you. Raisins also have high levels of triglycerides due to their high content of fructose (triglycerides are byproducts of the body metabolizing fructose). High level of triglycerides can increase your chances of developing diabetes, coronary heart disease, and fatty liver cancer. If you have other risk factors, then be careful and don’t add too many raisins into your diet!

Home remedies for Dandruff

Dandruff is caused when a fungus called Malassezia grows on your scalp. This results in shedding of the scalp skin. There are two types of dandruff – one occurs due to the dryness of the scalp, while the other occurs due to the excessive production of oil on the scalp.

Some of the known causes of dandruff are:

  • Improper and irregular brushing of hair
  • Infrequent shampooing
  • Improper diet
  • Stress and certain illnesses like Parkinson’s disease, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis

Dandruff can be controlled by following a healthy hair care routine. You can also try some simple natural home remedies. It is true that natural remedies take time to show results but they can effectively treat the problem completely.

Here are some home remedies for dandruff —

Neem The antifungal and antibacterial properties of neem, help treat dandruff as well as many other hair problems like scalp acne, itchy scalp, and hair fall efficiently.

  • Boil a handful of neem leaves in four cups of water.
  • Cool and strain the solution.
  • Use this decoction as a hair rinse two or three times a week.

Coconut Oil Coconut oil helps eliminate dandruff due to its antifungal properties. It also moisturizes dry scalp and provides relief from itching.

  • Take some coconut oil and mix half the amount of lemon juice in it.
  • Rub it on your scalp and massage for a few minutes.
  • Wash your hair after at least 20 minutes.
  • Follow this remedy two to three times a week.

Apple cider Vinegar Scalp treatment with apple cider vinegar is effective in getting rid of dandruff. It restores the pH balance of the scalp, thereby inhibiting the growth of yeast. It also works as a natural hair clarifier and helps clean clogged pores and hair follicles.

• Take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
• Mix an equal amount of water and 15-20 drops of tea tree oil in it.
• Apply it onto your scalp and massage. Rinse your hair after a few minutes.
• Follow this natural treatment two or three times a week.

Baking Soda Being a mild exfoliant, baking soda helps remove dead skin cells. It can also help balance pH levels on the scalp and reduce the growth of fungi that cause dandruff.

  • After a couple of minutes, rinse your hair well with warm water.
  • Repeat once or twice a week for a few weeks.


Olive oil — Scalp dryness can be cured with regular use of extra-virgin olive oil, an effective natural moisturizer.

  • Heat some extra virgin olive oil until it is slightly warm.
  • Massage it onto your scalp and then wrap your hair in a warm towel.
  • Leave it on for at least 45 minutes or overnight and then shampoo and condition your hair.

Lemon Juice — Lemon juice contains acids that fight the fungi that can cause dandruff. It also helps relieve itching of the scalp.

  • Mix the juice of half a lemon in one-quarter cup of plain yogurt. Apply it on your hair and scalp. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off and shampooing your hair.
  • Alternatively, you can simply massage your scalp with a few teaspoons of lemon juice mixed with a little water. Leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing it out and shampooing your hair.

Fenugreek seeds — The herb fenugreek has antifungal and soothing properties that can help control dandruff to a great extent.

  • Soak two to three tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, grind them into a fine paste. You can also add a few teaspoons of plain yogurt to it.
  • Apply the paste all over your scalp and leave it in for a few hours.
  • Rinse it out and shampoo your hair.
  • Do this once or twice a week.

Yogurt — The yeast within our bodies triggers inflammation. This results in the build-up of yeast on the skin. Boosting the friendly bacteria inside our digestive systems can reduce the yeast within our bodies. Yogurt is one of the best sources of friendly bacteria, and it prevents scaling of the scalp. Since it is a good source of probiotics, it could be one of the ideal remedies for dandruff



  • Shampoo your hair and rinse.
  • Apply the yogurt to your scalp and leave it on for about 15 minutes.
  • Rinse your hair, and wash again using a small amount of shampoo.

Multani Mitti — Multani Mitti absorbs the oil, grease, and dirt – all of which cause dandruff. It also improves blood circulation to the scalp, thereby keeping it clean and dandruff-free

  • Mix the Multani mitti with enough water till you get a smooth paste. Add the lemon juice.
  • Apply the mixture to your scalp.
  • Leave it on for about 20 minutes, after which you can wash it off with water.

Garlic Garlic has excellent antifungal properties that can eliminate the microbes that cause dandruff

  • Crush the garlic cloves and mix it with honey till you get a smooth paste.
  • Massage this paste into your scalp and leave it on for about 15 minutes.
  • Shampoo your hair as usual.

Salt — The abrasive nature of table salt plays a significant role in scrubbing off the dandruff flakes before you shampoo your hair.

  • Rub the salt onto your scalp (ensure your scalp is dry when you do this).
  • Work the salt through your hair, giving your scalp a good massage.
  • Do this for about 10 minutes, or until you have worked out the dry and flaky skin.
